I’m not participating in NaNoWriMo this year. I won’t get into all the reasons why. If you’re active in the writing community, you have probably seen all the things. So, I am not going to talk about that. What I am going to talk about is the new challenge I am participating in during the month of November, as a NaNoWriMo replacement. Let’s discuss!
I have decided to join the Rough Draft Challenge, which is a new writing challenge created by Sarra Cannon at Heart Breathings on YouTube. Check out her video to learn more!
The project I am going to be writing for the challenge has been announced on the corresponding author blog. But since it is a writing challenge, it must be shared to the challenge blog.
Project Wonder is the working title for this young adult sci-fi portal fantasy adventure, following a young woman who has lived a very isolated life and finds herself caught in a journey through different worlds that started by entering her missing father’s forbidden lab.
The fMC (female main character), Dottie, is going to have such a great character arc. I’ve been deep in brainstorming and I think I can safely say that Dottie is going to be a mostly well-rounded character.
The story will follow Dottie through everything, and there is going to be an integral sub-plot to push the main plot to it’s climax. I have it all planned out. The last time I had a story planned out like this… I cannot reveal that to you as I am still working on that one, privately.
There is an “official” title for this project. Maybe you can spot it in my story board.
I am still tracking my word count progress on the NaNoWriMo website, at least until I find a new one that works as good or better. Truthfully, that is the only feature I’ve ever used on the NaNoWriMo website. I am trying out 2 different trackers, and Sarra Cannon said her husband is working on a website specifically for the RDC, so I’m excited to give that a try as well.
In the meantime, I want my visitors to know that I made this decision this year based on my past fails of trying to write 50,000 words in thirty days and feeling absolutely gutted when I see all my writer friends succeeding, and I barely reach 28k.
If you decide you are still participating in NaNoWriMo, that’s totally fine! I completely support you and you will definitely see me participate in more future Camp sessions. I just happen to prefer smaller word count goals now and I can achieve them better with my current schedule.
In terms up updating y’all on my progress… I would like to stick to my usual once a week wrap-up, it’s just a matter of remembering to update. When I am in the zone, I don’t think of social media presence all that much. But I am making TikToks again and you can certainly see me more over there than any other platform.

So that is my update this week. There is only a week and a half left in PrepTober, and I am brainstorming Project Wonder to be at a point that I don’t have too many unanswered questions later.
Are you doing any writing challenges this November? Comment below; I want to cheer for you!
