Welcome back to The WriMo Blog! Today’s post is a continuation to my ONC Tips & Tricks series.
The Open Novella Contest (ONC) 2025 is just around the corner, and whether it’s your first year or your fourth (like me!), preparation is the key to success. In this episode, we’ll explore how to set yourself up for a smooth and productive ONC experience. I’ll also share tips on crafting a sustainable writing strategy for the 12-week journey ahead. Let’s dive in!
Veteran’s Checklist for Success
Before you dive into writing, take some time to get organized. Trust me, setting a strong foundation now will save you headaches later.
Here’s a checklist to help you prepare:
Set Up Your Account(s):
- Ensure your Wattpad account is active and updated. Double-check your username and bio—this is your chance to attract readers.
If you already have an account but you haven’t used it in a while, make sure your password still works! If you can’t get in, you can’t really participate in the official challenge.
If you don’t have an account, signing up is free!
Read the Rules Carefully:
- Familiarize yourself with the contest guidelines, including word count limits, submission deadlines, and eligibility criteria.
At the time I am sharing this episode, the guidelines book is not yet posted. So make sure you follow the official Open Novella Contest profile. The Moderators will announce when the guidelines are available.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT CREATE YOUR ENTRY BOOK ON THE WATTPAD SITE UNTIL ON OR AFTER FEBRUARY 1ST. Entries created prior to the contest start-date will not qualify!
Understand the Timeline:
There are three key milestones--
- End of Month 1: Submit 2,000 words by February 28th.
- End of Month 2: Submit 8,000 words by March 21st.
- Final Deadline: Submit 20,000 words by April 30th.
I like to set middle-ground milestones, such as aiming for 5,000 words by the first deadline.
The Moderators will have their in-depth contest timeline in the guidelines book, and it does change slightly each year. So, make sure you read it thoroughly for yourself.
Also, if you live with someone—parents, partner, roommate—make sure you make them aware that you are planning to be writing during certain or days. This way they know you cannot be disturbed.
Gather Your Supplies:
- Have everything you need for the 12 weeks (notebooks, pens, snacks, etc.) ready and accessible.
While this challenge is not as time-intensive like 50,000 words in 30 days, having everything you need beforehand is super helpful. Your writing can happen uninterrupted.
- Set up a word count tracker.
I typically use the tracker on the *coughs* NaNoWriMo website. Its just so simple and I’m used to it. But I have also been giving TrackBear a go; its completely free and works really well, when I remember to put in my word count for the day.
Another one I have been trying out is actually a writing software called 4theWords. You can set your word count goal and it becomes a game. The more words you write, you have a better chance at defeating the monsters.
Or, if you like analog. Check out the Heart Breathings website, by Sarra Cannon. She has amazing resources for writers and authors. One of them is a printable word count tracker. You can get access by signing up for the Heart Breathings newsletter. 🍒
Prep Your Workspace:
- A clean and organized space can help clear your mind and boost creativity.
I admit I am guilty of a messy workspace, but that’s just because I don’t have an official workspace to call my own. I write in my family’s dining room. (Hopefully that changes soon!)
Preparation is the first step toward success. Taking time now to organize your tools, understand the rules, and create a plan will help you hit the ground running when the contest begins.
In the next episode, we’ll explore how to choose the perfect ONC prompt and stick with it throughout the contest. Stay tuned!
